2024-07-26
Between the huge and icy Himalayas and the Karakoram Mountain ranges is a destination that captivates travelers with its untouched and raw beauty, we’re talking about none other than Ladakh. This remote but beautiful region is known for its high-altitude deserts and magnificent scenery. It’s also a destination where people literally spend their hard-earned money to ride a bike to, only to experience the natural snow-covered trees by their side, a true wonder of a place.

Every traveler that decides that a trip to this wonderland is on their cards, they instantly know that they are going to be greeted by crystal clear lakes (or iced covered lakes if you plan to go in the winter), ancient monasteries, adventurous mountain passes, and a lot more. It is a journey that you know is going to be the highlight of your life. Here’s some destinations to add to your bucket list to make those highlights even special -

  1. Pangong Tso Lake – It's not even a surprise that we’ve kept this in our “Top 7 List”. Everyone who’s been to Ladakh has made a point to go there and that is due to a rare phenomenon that appears here. This lake is situated 4,350 meters (about 2.7 mi) above ground but that’s not what’s special about it. The special part is that it changes hues. It goes from being azure, to green and even grey. But this is not the only thing that makes it special. It was also the site of shooting for a blockbuster Bollywood Hit movie which you might just recognize - "3 Idiots". Do experience the scenery from this lake and if you have enough time here then opt for a camping trip by the lake, it’s totally worth it.
  1. Nubra Valley – Nubra Valley is located between the rivers Shyok and Nubra. It is also known as the Valley of Flowers and rightfully so, it is filled with orchards, scenic vistas, Bactrian camels, and ancient monasteries. It has the most beautiful field filled with flowers and it’s almost magical and unbelievable at first sight. Khar dung La pass, the highest motorable road in the world, also passes through this place and is just another experience that this destination entails.  Another added experience here is The Diskit Monastery and the sand dunes at Hunder, do be sure to add them to your list as it’s an experience out of this world.
  1. Leh Palace – Leh palace is a 9 Storey palace located on to of a hill and offers the view of the whole town of Leh. What’s more special about this is that it was built in the 17th century and still stands strong on that same mountain top, giving you a glimpse into the region’s rich past. It also houses a museum showcasing artifacts, ancient jewelry, and ceremonial dresses from Ladakh’s culture. But if you’re not much of a history buff then just go there for the views. The view from the palace overlooking the town is phenomenal.
  1. Magnetic Hill – This is a destination that defies the laws of gravity known to man and there is a weird phenomenon at play over at the hills. Wehn parked on a designated spot, the cars here move uphill instead of downhill. While the phenomenon can be attributed to an optical illusion, it’s pretty weird when it happens, and it can be a great photo opportunity. Located on the Leh-Kargil-Srinagar highway, this magnetic hill attracts numerous tourists every year.
  1. Tso Moriri Lake – This is a lake that is pretty much the “lesser-known lake” in Ladakh but equally beautiful once you come here. Located at an altitude of 4522 meters, Tso Moriri Lake is surrounded by snow-capped mountains and a part of the Tso Moriri Wetland Conservation Reserve. The main point being, there are a lot of migratory birds and a variety of wildlife, which if you’re a birdwatcher or even slightly interested in animal kingdom, makes it a place of popular interest for you.
  1. Thiksey Monastery – One of the largest and most beautiful monasteries out there. A true work of art with a twelve-story complex with many stupas, statues, and murals. The main attraction here still isn’t the monastery but the statue it houses inside. A 49-foot-high statue of Maitreya Buddha is what makes this place so popular, besides the fact that you can be a part of the morning prayers and get the views of the Indus Valley from the monastery itself. It’s true a great place if you want to warm yourself up for the Buddhist culture or even if you want to relate with the customs and the people of Ladakh.
  1. Zanskar Valley – If you were looking for a wholly isolated region of Ladakh, then you’ve reached our final and one of the must-visit places in Ladakh. It’s known for its dream-like scenery, really, it’s magnificent like a landscape like such could exist. So detached and completely different from what we view in our day-to-day life of the metropolis. Most popular activities here include trekking, river rafting, and exploring ancient monasteries like Karsha and Phuktal. The Chadar Trek on the frozen Zanskar River is a unique and challenging experience if you’re adventurous and motivated enough to go through it but all of it is for the day. In the night, this place turns into the stargazing spot where the stars are visible in the night sky which is not possible in the city life and makes it an even more beautiful experience.
Ladakh is known as the ‘Land of High Passes’ and for good reason, the places at high altitude, the beauty that these places capture, the exact opposite that the places are from the city life and the spirit of oneness and spirituality that this destination captures are something out of this world. Whether you are seeking a spiritual retreat, an adventurous journey, or simply just want to experience raw and natural beauty, Ladakh is the perfect destination. Plan your trip to these seven incredible places and experience the magic of the Land of Ladakh.
