Pangong Lake

If you are visiting Leh, you cannot complete your trip without stopping at Pangong Lake. The lake is stretched between the Himalayas, some of it lying in the Leh district of Ladakh and the others in Tibet. The Pangong lake is one of the highest lakes in India, the lake altitude is 4350 meters (14270 feet). It is known for breathtaking landscapes and often looks the same or more beautiful than in pictures. 

Best time to visit: 

The weather is pleasant during May-Septembers. So, to escape from the heat, summers are a great time to visit this place and the lake is completely accessible. The temperature varies from -25°C in winter to 10°C in summer. Not to miss out on the factor while planning the trip, during the summers multiple migratory birds are also stopping by this location. Winters are usually harsh, and as the temperatures drop below freezing point, it is not ideal to visit from September to January as the lake is partially frozen. 

How do I get there? 

Visitors can reach Pangong by road from Leh. It takes 5–6 hours, passing through the beautiful villages of Shey, Thiksey, and Chumathang. It is an adventure but worth the hassle, as the stunning beauty is mesmerizing. To reach there, one can hire taxis or private vehicles from Leh. But one can also join travel and tours that organize or rent motorbikes for a unique and exceptional journey. 

What is it known for? 

It is famous for its crystal-clear turquoise waters against the rugged mountains and vast landscape. The water's uniqueness is a result of its high salinity and mineral deposits. The unique geological formations and majestic mountains create a landscape that is awe-spiring. 

The place is also known because it has been the backdrop for multiple films, including the famous 3 Idiots with Aamir Khan. A boat ride to explore the lake or even a simple walk to soak up the ambience is relaxing. Some parts around the lake also allow camping. One can clearly spot galaxies and stars while gazing at the night sky.  

What do I eat there? 

Some of the famous delicacies and dishes famous in Leh are Kahwa (a green tea with spices), Thupka (a noodle soup usually served hot with mostly meat but also available with veggies), Skyu (a Ladakhi pasta-like dish made with root vegetables or meat), barley porridge (a nutritious porridge made from locally grown barley known as ningroo), butter tea (also known as gur gur chai, which is very famous and must try), and momos/dumplings. 

There are multiple smaller local restaurants, stalls, and homestays that serve food. But because it is a remote destination, one might have to search for places. Due to tourists and local people around, there are some cafes in the area. 

Note:

Make sure you carry a medical kit, as most of us aren't used to staying at higher altitudes like this.
